Composting!

I know that I live in a fairly progressive city, but I have heard stories from all around the country about different cities doing wonderful things, so I don't think that Portland is of the map amazing... but I DO think that what they are doing with their trash program is FABULOUS!
Starting on October 31st, we can put all table scraps (except for large quantities of grease and oil) in our composting cans. Yay!! Even pizza boxes!
This means that trash is greatly reduced, and all the compost is sent to a composting facility where they compost it for use as soil amendment. Also, now I don't have to deal with my husband's grumbling about our composter that he hates. It is a win-win.
I just think that the city residents should get first dibs on the compost created for a discounted rate. I mean, it is our garbage that they are making money off of, right? :)
So, yay for Portland changing things up to help decrease trash in landfills and making people more conscious about what they throw away and use. They are even providing the bucket to collect the scraps in. No excuses!

So tell me, what is your city doing?
